Resources.
If you’re curious to learn more about global games industry take a look at these resources below. I reference these resources frequently when writing my own pieces and highly recommend them!
Industry News.
-
GamesBeat
GameBeat is a category of Venturebeat.com that specializes in writing about the business of the games industry. From acquisitions, to launches and some quality interviews by lead editor Dean Takahashi - definitely recommend you check this one out.
The site offers a membership service which grants exclusive content. Even their free membership tier grants access to their newsletter which I recommend signing up for.
-
GamesIndustry.Biz
Behind the somewhat silly name, GamesIndustry.biz is a great site that not only covers industry news but also events, job postings and a solid podcast posted frequently.
Their newsletter is well curated and a steady way of getting the most relevant headlines throughout your week.
-
MCV Develop
Another great site that balances industry news but also offers some stances on events. Not to mention the writing is high quality!
Worth noting, MCV Develop is a UK based site so may not get much Asia exposure and it slants more console than mobile.
Analytics.
-
NewZoo
NewZoo produces high quality market research reports about the games industry. With everything from infographics to trends, many game companies look to NewZoo for research. If you’re curious about the size of the industry, its growth rate as well as where it’s happening - check out NewZoo!
For example, here is their 2021 Global Games Market Report
-
Niko Partners
Niko Partners is the go-to place for market intelligence for China and other major asian markets. Similar to Newzoo, they are trusted by many reputable games companies to understand the asian game landscape and inform their investments.
They charge a high premium for some of their market reports but that is more a testament to their thoroughness and expertise than anything.
-
VGChartz
VG Chartz tracks the sales of video game software and hardware. It provides clear, up-to-date data on how games are charting either regionally or globally.
They are a great resource for comparing console sales to determine whose “winning” the current console war.
It’s not exactly the cleanest site, nor does it say much more beyond the data but as a simple, blunt scoreboard for the industry it works wonders.

Matthew Ball Essays
Matthew Ball is the Managing Partner of EpyllionCo, which operates a pre-seed and seed venture fund. He is also a Venture Partner at Makers Fund. From 2016-2018, Matthew served as the global Head of Strategy for Amazon Studios.
Matthew writes long-form essays not just on gaming but on technology and the entertainment industry. They are long and thorough but always worth the read.
For example, check out his 6-part primer on Epic Games.
-
Stratchery by Ben Thompson
Although not explicitly a games industry resource, Ben Thompson puts out incredible long form essays and interviews on his website and via email through a paid newsletter (100% worth it).
Weekly Articles are free, while three Daily Updates a week are for subscribers only.
Ben has been writing Stratechery since 2013, and has built quite a library of great content since then.

Deconstructor of Fun
Deconstructor of Fun breaks down successful free-to-play games in search of what makes them fun - or not. All of the contributors to this site are both gamers and game makers.
Some of the pieces are very long but they are replete with thorough analysis, both quantitative and qualitative.
